Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been interested in how things work (or sometimes, don’t work). I’m one of those people who asks a lot of questions. This blog is an exercise in figuring out how we got to where we are as a country and how we might dig ourselves out of the hole we find ourselves in as a nation and as a society. The initial question is, what steps can we take to start building common ground?
You may be wondering, so who is this guy, anyway? Well, here’s a brief history of some of the experiences that led me here: My first job was as a dishwasher when I was 16. Since then, I’ve played the roles of employee trainer, restaurant general manager, independent consultant, vacation concierge, college professor, event producer, tour manager, and home inspector. Along the way I collected three college degrees and spent time as a student of business, architecture, and culinary arts.
I’m still learning. Over the years, I have benefited from the input of dozens of smart, creative, and insightful people who have provided encouragement and helped me evolve my thinking so far, and I don’t expect that to end any time soon. I also know that I have developed skills as an educator, speaker, writer, problem-solver, event manager and experience designer. I can play a guitar, ride a snowboard or a windsurfer, hike a mountain and climb an occasional rock. I’m a pretty good cook and a respectable 3-point shooter. I have discovered that I am both a cat-person and a dog-person. I enjoy fast cars, when I can get my hands on them. I consider myself an experience collector and have been fortunate to have travelled to India, Brazil, Morocco, Dubai, Hong Kong, France, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, England and several Caribbean Islands. On one beautiful autumn day, I jumped out of a plane at 11,000 feet. But there are still many things I have yet to do.
My goal here is summarize a wide range of stuff I’ve learned over the years and to explore even more things I don’t quite understand yet. I’m smart enough to realize that pretty much everyone knows something that I don’t, so I hope to keep adding more knowledge and perspective as this blog evolves. Got ideas? I want to hear about them.
